about

MUSIC AND ITS DOUBLE

Antonin Artaud gave me the idea that like Theater, music could also be pure and autonomous with the spell of hallucinations and fear. In tantric visions, fear is often a type of purification, a blessing if you will, where we face ourselves and these specters dissipate within the nature of reality without self. Music, like the shamans, invokes a “double”,a shadow, a ghost or specter, not merely a conflict of feelings resolved, but a state of mind within a musical geometry, within a space reduced to vertical densities, horizontal waves, crossings, attacks, motifs, spatial disruptions of time broken or seemingly floating, and surrounding as an atmosphere. At times, tones might mimic speech as soft, arousing, intolerable, and even ear shattering, a spectacle of contrast.

We can experience music as an entrance of characters making gestures in mirrors,a series of moving masks displaying the range of human personality, spinning in different directions at different angles. We begin to hear tones within tones and we feel the dramatic purpose of trance, the struggle of a soul beset by ghosts inflicting a kind of violence on the listener, destroying in thunder the state of things in which we live. Here the human being stands where dreams and physical events collide.

One can only imagine the significance of music in the human story long before the colonial and industrial period, maybe 10,000 years, ago after the last ice age, when the ice began to melt. People slowly emerged from their caves, their severe isolation, and began to resonate together, altering their central nervous system, a correspondence of vibration that everyone understood.
